Solar 101
Every day, photons stream from the sun onto your home. Photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar panels convert those photons into electrons of direct current (DC) electricity. The electricity then flows into a microinverter, which converts it to alternating current (AC) — the kind of electricity we use in our homes. This animated video explains how solar cells work, but you don’t need a degree to understand it!
After we install your solar power system, the utility company will replace your traditional meter with a net meter. This meter will constantly track all of the AC electricity flowing from your solar system and automatically divert to the grid any excess solar energy that your home isn’t using. When you consume more electricity than your system is producing (including at night and on cloudy days), it allows you to draw electricity from the grid. Your utility company will bill you for the difference between the energy you feed into the grid and draw from it.

Is Solar Right For Me?
Our experts will consider several factors to accurately determine your home’s solar power potential, including:
- Roof area — Usable roof space determines the maximum size of a system you can install. A small but simple roof may have more usable roof space than a larger one that is “interrupted” by dormers or gables.
- Roof orientation — Solar is ideal for south-, east-, and west- facing roofs and flat roofs. South-facing roofs get maximum sun exposure; flat roofs allow us to erect south-facing panels. East- and west-facing roofs allow you to capture the sun’s power for about half of the day.
- Roof shading — Shade cast by trees, nearby homes or buildings, or other structures will reduce your system’s performance. Sometimes this issue can be resolved by trimming trees or installing a ground-mounted system in a sunnier portion of your property.
Installing Solar
A photovoltaic (PV) solar power system, which converts the energy in sunlight into an electrical current, includes these four primary components:
- PV solar panels unite several solar cells into a single panel, where they convert the energy in sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity
- Microinverters convert the direct current produced by panels into alternating current (AC) for household use
- Mounting racks screw into your roof to support the solar panels and microinverters a few inches above your roof
- System wiring unites the panels and microinverters into a power system
